Who is Master Lao-Tzu?
Daniel Lamontagne of Memphis, TN
is a regular guest at Cosmic Connections.
He comes often to do meditation workshops, private sessions,
and an evening of channeled wisdom from Lao-Tzu
Lao-Tzu is simply Chinese for "Old Master" and the man who bore this title was Li Erh
who was born around 604 B.C.and lived a long and good life as the royal court librarian and historian.

As the story goes, when he retired he was asked to write down his thoughts and thus became the founder of
Taoism, which began not as a religion but as a philosophy.

The best translation for Tao is "the way" which means that Taoism is both the path
and the method for enlightenment.

The words he gave us all are filled with wisdom and ambiguity---because life is neither simple nor obvious.
They are the ideas of a mature and thoughtful person who has lived a full life and understood what works and
what doesn't work. As librarian and historian he was able to sit back and explore life and gave us a wonderful gift
with his culminating thoughts that he drew together at the end.

Here are some of those thoughts:

"Not to honor men of worth will keep the people from contention; not to value goods which are hard to come by will
keep them from theft; not to display what is desirable will keep them from being unsettled of mind. "

"There is no crime greater than having too many desires;
There is no disaster greater than not being content;
There is no misfortune greater than being covetous.
Hence in being content, one will always have enough."

"Knowing others is to be clever.
Knowing yourself is to be enlightened.
Overcoming others requires force.
Overcoming yourself requires strength.
to know that you have enough is to be rich.
There is a time to breathe easy and a time to breathe hard.
There is a time to be vigorous and a time to be gentle.
There is a time to gather and a time to release.
Therefore, the True Person avoids extremes, self-indulgence, and extravagance."

For nearly 30 years, Daniel Lamontagne has worked with various teachers and guided countless students in the
study and practice of meditation and the healing arts. A graduate of Christian Brothers College, Daniel has long
recognized that awareness of the body-mind-spirit connection is essential in maintaining a full and healthy life.

As Daniel's entrepreneurial ventures expanded; he remained focused on the body-mind-spirit connection and
particularly on his own spiritual cultivation. Raised a Roman Catholic, Daniel built upon that foundation through
daily meditation and the study of other world religions and spiritual practices. Through those studies, both formal
and informal, he has seen the common thread that weaves through and unites all faiths and spiritual endeavors-
the single thread that bears many names, such as God Consciousness, Christ Consciousness, Buddha
Consciousness, and the Holy Spirit. Daniel's personal journey has led him to active participation in the Chee
Chung / Chee Hau meditation community, which centers on a Taoist / Buddhist / Confucian tradition. He is also
connected to the Pu-lin Buddhists Temple in Memphis.

Daniel will go into a deep state of meditation and connect with the wisdom and energy of Lao Tzu. He will go
around the room and talk with each person. His teachings are more Eastern than Western. Sometimes he works
through confusion wanting us to make our own decisions. He does not want us to depend on him for all the
answers. On the other hand he may be very direct and very accurate. He wants us to make our own choices. He
makes us think, and makes us feel. In that way we can grow. He acts as a mirror in order that we may see
ourselves more clearly.
